The best cheeses to go with your salads
Salads are delicious and refreshing during summer. Let your creativity flourish – try a different salad every day and add cheeses of your liking to heighten their taste. Here’s our advice on how to choose cheeses to create colorful and powerful salads.
We’ll examine three criteria to choose your cheese: the texture you’re looking for, the appearance of your cheese, and, of course, the taste.
Choose the right cheese texture for your salad
Cheeses have different textures, and it’s important to take this into account. Do you want a hard cheese, a soft ripened cheese, or even a slightly hot and melted cheese? You’ll want to use your cheese to counterbalance your salad’s overall texture. If you have a salad that contains nuts or toast, you’ll want a soft cheese, such as a hot goat’s cheese log or some blue cheese. Otherwise, we recommend using a hard cheese to add some body to your otherwise soft salad.
Choose the color of your cheese for your salad
There are two things that define the main color of your salad: either the salad itself, or its other ingredients. If your salad has a beautiful green color and is mainly composed of vibrant colors, you can select a white cheese, such as Supreme or camembert, that will stand out and catch the eye of your guests. If your salad contains corn, or other ingredients that are close to white in color, try to add some warmth to the color, with orange cheeses, such as Dorothy’s Holy Smoke, or a goat’s milk cheese log flavored with sundried tomatoes.
Choose the flavor of your cheese to go with your salad
The taste of your cheese is mainly up to you. However, it’s worth knowing that some options are usually favored for salads. For example, a good cheddar such as pour me a slice will be a nice addition to most salads. Hot goat’s cheese is also widely appreciated with toasted bread on salads. That aside, let your creativity speak, with blue cheese, sheep’s cheese, or whatever cheese you fancy. For extra deliciousness, you can rub your cheese with paprika, or another condiment that will enhance your salad.
